Pittsburg Phil (1875-1904) was an American thoroughbred racehorse who raced during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was owned by George E. Smith and trained by William Lakeland. Phil was renowned for his racing style, which saw him come from behind to win many races.
The horse won 7 stakes races in his career, including the 1899 Brooklyn Handicap, which at the time was the richest race in America. However, Phil was also infamous for his poor behavior off the track. He was known to bite and kick, and would often refuse to enter the starting gate.
Phil was retired to stud in 1903, but died a year later at the age of 29 due to complications from a stomach ailment. Despite his somewhat difficult personality, Pittsburg Phil remains a memorable figure in American racing history.
